Two TV Shows Worth Watching

Happy December! It has been a little while since I have mentioned brilliant TV shows that I am enjoying, so here goes…

Today I wanted to talk about two programmes that have maintained my attention recently. They are shows that I would recommend you to have a look at.

Lessons In Chemistry (Apple TV Plus)

This show suddenly appeared on Apple TV Plus recently and was played out at a rate of one episode per week. Based on a popular book that I have yet to read, the story is about a woman who had a passion for science. At a time when women could only be lab assistants, she was keen to publish research about DNA.

Elizabeth Zott (played by Brie Larson) fell in love with another leading scientist, Calvin Evans (Lewis Pullman), while working as his lab assistant. A turn of fate led to her being alone and not being allowed recognition for her own work. Combining a love for chemistry and cookery, she took the chance to host a new food show on TV.

Set in the 1950s, Lessons In Chemistry is reminiscent and beautifully filmed.

Boat Story (BBC iPlayer)

There is a new TV series on the BBC which is quirky and intriguing. Starring Daisy Haggard as Janet Campbell and Samuel Peterson as Joseph Wells, this story is about a boat that was washed ashore full of drugs.

Janet and Samuel discovered the boat with two dead bodies on board and a drug stash that they decided to make their own. The hilarity comes when the French gang leader comes over to England to find the people who stole his goodies.

In A Nutshell

Both of these programmes are well written and satisfying to watch. ‘Boat Story’ is a kind of dark comedy whereas ‘Lessons In Chemistry’ is a wonderful 1950s drama.

Big Little Lies 3

As a massive Liane Moriarty fan, I am constantly on the lookout for TV projects that stem from her work. Originally it was the book cover of her novel, ‘Big Little Lies’ that got me interested in her writing. Seeing Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman on the front, I wanted to check out the story which was then being turned into a TV show.

What Do I Like About It?

Meeting the characters on the page and then on screen, I was hooked by the events of some Monteray Bay women who were wrapped up in a drama that could possibly incriminate them.

Madeline (Reese), Celeste (Nicole) and Jane (Shailene Woodley) led a cast which included the wonderful Laura Dern. The men in the story also had important roles, as husbands and antagonists. I remember in the first episode, one of the children getting into an altercation with Renata’s kids and that started a string of events that spun the characters into each other orbits which resulted in good and bad events.

Meryl Streep joined the cast in the second season. Although Liane Moriarty never wrote a second book, she did write a novella to provide the producers with a basis for that season. David E Kelley wrote the scripts and Nicole, Liane and Reese acted as Executive Producers.

So What Now?

Nicole has announced that the team are back together, working on a third series of Big Little Lies. I am not sure if Liane wrote a treatment this time but it is likely she is involved. It is brilliant news and quite unexpected.

It will be exciting to see what happens to the Monteray 5 next. The award winning cast and crew should be able to brighten up our lives with more drama very soon.

Loving Neighbours Again

My love affair with the TV show ‘Neighbours’ began in 1986. The Australian soap was light and funny and everyone watched it back then. It was the talk of my school.

As well as drawing our attention to my favourite pop star, Kylie Minogue, it has introduced many stars, including Guy Pearce, Natalie Imbruglia, Chris and Liam Hemsworth and Margot Robbie.

When it finished last year, seemingly forever, I was absolutely gutted. Check out my Everybody Needs Good Neighbours post to appreciate my feelings about this.

Luckily, when I went to the Neighbours farewell tour in Brighton, the news had already arrived that Amazon Freevee had bought Neighbours and it could then become a celebration tour instead.

It Is Back!

Since it came back in September, I have been glued to the exciting and amusing storylines. Although some characters had left, the newer ones have added even more drama. It is especially cool to see Mischa Barton from the OC in this season.

With occasional appearances by Guy Pearce and all of my favourites (Jane, Susan, Karl, Chloe etc), I am loving the four days a week format. This week we had a sequence of flashbacks, with previous cast members popping back to tell the story of what happened during the period that Neighbours was off screen.

I am loving the twists that flashback week has brought. High drama!

In A Nutshell

Normally it is hard to get into a soap opera without weeks of watching. But right now is an excellent time to try out ‘Neighbours,’ especially as it is available in the US and Canada via the Amazon platform. I know I am biased but I would urge anyone to take a look and see if they enjoy this light, easy to follow series as much as I do.
