TV Shows Worth Trying

Every now and again you will find me reviewing some of the latest TV content that I have been hooked into. So here I am again sharing my thoughts on some brilliant recent TV series. The first has two very entertaining seasons so far and each episode is thirty minutes long, while the second is a three-part police drama which I found to be riveting.

Dead To Me (Netflix)

This funny series has quite a stark backdrop. Jen Harding (Christina Applegate) has lost her husband in a car accident when she is befriended by Judy Hale (Linda Cardellini), not knowing that she is reaching out as the woman who ran the hubby over. The guilt that Judy holds is palpable and makes every scene either funny or intense.

The strange friendship that they established becomes uncomfortable and amusing. Judy finds that she is trying to hide her connection, but her ex-boyfriend keeps stirring up trouble for her. In season two, working as a duo, her and Jen have such hilarious situations consume them, as they now both know the full story about each other.

From moments of drama to scenes of laughter, these two Hollywood actors do a great job of taking you on a journey through their chaotic lives. With short episodes, it would be a shame not to try out one and see if you agree that this Netflix show is well worth a watch.

The Tower (ITV/Britbox)

I have always loved watching Gemma Whelan act, starting when I saw her in Game of Thrones as Yara Greyjoy. Her recent three-part series is about a police sergeant who was in charge of investigating a tragic event that occurred at a high storey building in London.

Taken from a short book called ‘The Tower: Post Mortem’ by Kate London, this was an extremely gripping show where Gemma got to showcase her subtle ability to closely portray any character. A policeman and teenage girl had jumped from a tower block for no obvious reason. Rather than wiping it out as an accident, DS Sarah Collins (Gemma) was determined to get to the bottom of the more sinister causes.

Both of these shows have been enjoyable. Dead To Me is now returning for a third season and it is rumoured that DS Sarah Collins will also be coming back in another drama, utilising her detective skills. For another TV review check here.

Love Hard – A Cheesy Review

I am a sucker for a Christmas movie and this particular Netflix film appeared on my suggestions as well as on another blog, so it soon got added to my Watchlist. Starring the love interest from ‘Never Have I Ever’ and a few others that I didn’t recognise, I thought it would be worth checking out.

The film involved a writer who was usually producing articles about dates that had gone wrong. Her matches were commonly random and included guys who came 20th in competitions like ‘The Batchelor’. One thing that her boss could count on was good content based on a string of failed dates.

Anyway, she finally met someone who was charming, clever and matched her personality, as well as being ruggedly handsome. So she took a chance and flew to Lake Placid to stay with him and his family at Christmas time.

The only problem was… she had been catfished.

With a Christmas backdrop and tones of red and green all over the sets, this very cheesy film was sweet, silly and heart-warming. If you are looking for some easy viewing then this is a good story to hook up with.

Starring Nina Dobrev, Jimmy O Yang and Darren Barnet, this exploration of festive dating is pure fun. I found it perfect for whiling away a few hours on a cold Saturday morning. So if you are happy with a bit of cheese and some cuteness rolled into one and slathered with laughs, then check it out.

Autumn TV Shows

Every now and then I like to share some of the brilliant TV shows that I am currently enjoying. This month I am playing catch up as I have a lot of series to get through before some of my favourites come back. I am especially looking forward to some feel-good Christmas movies and shows as well as the forthcoming return of Stranger Things.

Love and Anarchy

These two actors are incredibly talented.

I had forgotten to mention this Swedish TV show which has 8 episodes of about half an hour in length. I found it randomly and it caught my eye because it came across as a funny concept. I often watch programmes with subtitles and, for me, this doesn’t detract from the story and my enjoyment of it.

Sofia is an executive who comes into a publishing firm to modernise them as they are stuck in the past and have no social media presence. Max is a young guy who works in IT support. They find each other amusing and start to initiate pranks to make the time pass more quickly. Taking it in turns to set ridiculous but hilarious challenges for each other, they also notice an attraction burning.

I laughed out loud at many of the predicaments they got into. I particularly loved it when Max insisted that Sofie walked backwards all day, including when entering and leaving meetings. If she walked normally at any point she would have lost the bet. It can sometimes get a bit racy so this one is definitely for adults only.

Locke and Key

Netflix at its best – a thrilling ride.

Netflix has just produced the second YA series of Locke and Key which features the Locke family who moved into their ancestral home after the husband died. The three kids discover a cloudy past that hangs over the mansion, with special keys that only they can use to access specific skills.

By turning a key into the back of your head, you can come out of your body and go somewhere else, memorise a book or transform into someone else. By using a certain key, you can change any door into an escape route into another place that you can visualise.

Connor Jessop stars in this entertaining, fun and often thrilling series which has continued to maintain the pace and lock us all in as viewers. I haven’t quite finished season two but wanted to suggest you all have a look.

Today’s shows are both on Netflix and are highly recommended by me. Love and Anarchy has just wrapped a second season so get watching the first one. Locke and Key has just secured a third season. Both are very popular and wonderful. For my previous TV suggestions, click here.
