Hot Weather Poem

Today I wake up to another day when the temperatures are expected to hit 30 degrees in England. Historically the average June temperature was 15 degrees in June (looking at various sources) but it appears that average is going to be overridden. Here is my hot weather poem to get you thinking about this.

Feeling warmer,

Jumpers coming off.

Bright sunny skies,

A hayfever cough.

Rivers looking lower,

Loch Ness is drying up.

Crops turning yellow,

Wondering, ‘What’s up?’

Lollies and ice creams,

Barbeques galore.

Burning campfires,

Wildfires will soar.

Sneaky UV rays

Peeling off my skin,

Forget about the causes,

Just take it on the chin.

Sunny weather,

Rain thunderous now and then.

Flash floods happening,

Dreadful yet again.

Massive cities smothered,

In dirty, choking smog.

Was it their pollution

That caused it all along?

Do we take responsibility

For the warming we create?

Or simply let it happen,

Till we’re in a right old state?

Let’s call this a wake up,

Let’s take some action right away!

We cannot simply brush it off,

Or we’ll have no planet on which to stay!

Final Thoughts

After days of choking smoke in New York, how can anyone deny climate change? The new heatwave in the UK has come sooner than last year and will no doubt cause problems, including crop destruction and water shortages… again.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my hot weather poem. I hope that you might drop a comment with your thoughts on this issue. A World Without Ice – Poem

On the ITV News (Wednesday) they spoke about how rapidly the ice is retreating in the Arctic Circle. A report visited Svalbard where scientists famously research climate change. He spoke about the likelihood that there will be no ice at all in the North Pole by 2040. I could not stop worrying about how impactful a world without ice will be.

As temperatures rise seven times faster in the Arctic Circle, we have a sense of urgency. It is important that we combat global warming now. If we do not, ice will melt, sea levels will rise and animals become extinct. Warm air masses will dominate. Food shortages will be rife.

Whether or not most people care about climate change, I do not know. I do think we should care. We should do far more than care. Climate change needs tackling. Now.

Rant over… Take a look at my short ‘A World Without Ice’ poem.

A world without ice

Is boring and hot.

No snowflakes are falling,

Little fun to be got.

A world without ice

Means no polar bears too.

A lack of cold habitats

No need for skidoos.

A world without ice

Is sad and injust

With tropical storms

And deserts of dust.

A world without ice

Is a miserable place

Just carbon emissions

And smog in your face

A world without ice

Is a world I’d dislike.

So get out of those planes

And start riding your bike.

Final Thoughts

These are the times when we can make the biggest difference. As voters we can lobby the government to invest in fossil-free fuels. We can choose cleaner ways to travel. Distant meetings can be replaced with Zoom ones.

I hope that my little poem makes you think. I would hate to see Arctic animals lose their homes. Similarly I would hate to see the Fenlands covered in water. So many things I worry about.

Are you worried about climate change and ice melting? What suggestions do you have to make an impact?

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my environmental poem. For something less serious, have a read of my Motherland TV show review.

Brand New Poetry – Cleverly Woven Words

Writing is more than just a hobby. It is a lifestyle.

Guest Post

This week I am excited to share the poetry of an up-and-coming writer/ performer. I first heard about him on Davina McCall’s podcast – Making The Cut – which I have previously reviewed here.

In my opinion, Jacob Dolley’s words have meaning and resonance. I can tell that he speaks from his own experiences and shows empathy as well as encouragement in his work. It is great to see a new poet emerge onto the scene, starting with high praise from Davina and Michael, whose recommendations are always brilliant.

Brief Bio

My name is Jacob Dolley (18 years old)

I started writing poetry in lockdown when I was at my lowest with depression.
Poetry for me was a release and an escape from the outside world, but as my mental health has got much better and I’m feeling happier, my poetry has expanded into something more positive that I want to share with the world.
I want to inspire young people that there is 100% light at the end of the tunnel and that bad things don’t last forever.
I’m highly ambitious and have my eyes set on becoming a published writer (writing poetry).
I perform spoken word and spoken poetry, so a huge goal for me is to work with Charities and brands, using my poetry to spread the awareness of mental health.
I’ve been featured on Davina McCall’s podcast, as well as being a guest on ‘The Show Love’ podcast.
You can find me on Instagram @lightningpoems and TikTok (@lightningpoems).

Jacob’s Poem:

Treasure Your Smile

If you’ve forgotten what happiness is,
Let me run around your mind and jog your memory.
It’s little love songs and piano ballad melodies.
It’s warm hugs and rich kiss remedies.
Treasure your smile,
It’s your most beautiful accessory.

Jacob’s words:

Thank you very much,
This is my first time being mentioned in a blog so I’m very honoured!!
I’m based down in Tunbridge Wells (Kent) and perform at the venue ‘The Forum’ every month through ‘WordUp’ at an open mic poetry night if you ever wanted to come down.
